Smart cities have augmented infrastructure which is monitored and administered leading to a better life. In case of India, smart cities will have to provide basic civic necessities to make the infrastructure robust and flexible.
Currently, the challenges faced by cities today are due to the lack of proper infrastructure, increasing population, soaring prices etc.
There are some challenges that this mission will have to face:

Smart city planning is a long term plan with the high emphasis given to the overall development of the region. The regional planning will have to augment the city’s plans to provide a uniform experience.

To set up a smart city, economic drivers are crucial. They help set up a clear path of economic growth of the city.
3.Adaptive to the technology:
A huge investment in technology is required to control the infrastructure and development. But the technology upgrades quickly than the city, therefore the city should have the option to upgrade to and adapt to the changing technology.
4.Easy mobility:
Easy mobility in and out of the city is the major requirement for the smart city. Along with the public transport system, the development of the last mile connectivity is necessary for the mobility.
5.Water and waste management:
The collection, transportation, consumption and treatment of water play an integral part in the smart city. The new cities must be resourceful and positive towards the water and its usage.
Waste management through smart systems and providing healthy environment is the need for the smart cities.
6.Social infrastructure:
Better social infrastructure will help in making the city more habitable and attract more people to live there. The projects, to make it happen, must be funded by the government and its subsidiaries.
7.Availability of funds:
Smart cities are a long term project and need regular funding for the maintenance and to improve the infrastructure of the city.
8.Employment:
They must provide and generate more not only economic but also service jobs for the people to maintain a minimum standard of living.
9.Housing properties:
Since the aim of smart cities is to provide better-living facilities for the people, more and more people will try to migrate there. The laws of the smart cities should be such that more and more real estate developers invest in them to provide better housing facilities.
10.Phasing and maintenance:
A smart city must be built in phases to keep the track of the necessary demand and developing according to them.
Not only the development but he maintenance part of the smart cities is equally important. They should be easy to maintain, accommodate and expand to the needs of the citizens.
