The water crisis is the most important environmental issue we are facing. If measures in conserving water are not made now, then we will be facing acute water crisis in future. Few cities in the world have run out of the water and have started rationing them.

The groundwater is excessively exploited by the metro cities and to prevent such exploitation, the environmental ministry is planning to levy water conservation fees on industries and infrastructure projects. According to the ministry, the money collected through the levy will use for groundwater recharging projects as identified. More clarity on the fees will come into light as the National Green Tribunal (NGT) approves the plan.

The ministry has suggested the action plan for the next 50 years:
1.    By 2030:
a.    Registration and mapping of all drill agencies
b.    Putting in place water security policy
c.    Launching online monitoring of groundwater quality
2.    By 2040:
a.    Implementation of mega recharge project
b.    Mapping of catchment and protection of springs
3.    By 2060
a.    Finding fresh groundwater in offshore areas
b.    Assessment of submarine groundwater discharge to the sea
4.    By 2070
a.    Predicting possible draught situations, based on groundwater levels

Water conservation guide

Rainwater harvesting is a simple yet effective way of minimizing the usage of groundwater from the activities like flushing, washing, gardening etc. rainwater harvesting has many advantages although the implantation can cost a bit the money can be recovered easily and quickly from it.

Rooftop rainwater harvesting:

In this method, the rainwater is used as the catchment trough for collecting rainwater and the water is then transported through PVC gutters and downpipes to storage tanks. The tan is constructed in such a way that it easily collects the water from it in buckets. A first flush diverter is installed in the tank inlet to run- off the rain spell which has the most pollutants mixed in.

Groundwater rainwater harvesting system:

This method is also known as artificial recharge and is used to augment the groundwater reservoir at a higher speed than that of the natural replenishment. Any technique that requires and the aquifer is grouped under this head.

Tips to save water:

1.    Individual metering of the water is a good way to keep a track of how much water is being used by a household and limiting consumption.
2.    Using recycled water is a good way to reduce the cost of water.
3.  Installing a greywater treatment system can save up to a third of water usage of residential units by recycling the water used that is not contaminated by the faecal matter.
