Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) faces criticism as it prepares to present its budget on July 2 without a developed GIS mapping-based city master plan for sustainable growth. Urban planners and developers argue that the city's infrastructure suffers from erratic development due to the absence of centralized planning, leaving decisions at the discretion of individual corporators. They advocate for BMC to establish a comprehensive master plan to ensure efficient fund allocation instead of endorsing discretionary funds for corporators.
City planners and environmentalists highlight nearly two decades of uncoordinated development, resulting in numerous challenges and urban disarray. They urge BMC to prioritize sustainable urban planning, structured infrastructure development, consistent water supply, a robust sewage system, and effective waste management in its budget planning. Despite the implementation of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT)-II for sewage systems, planners stress the necessity for city-wide planning over ward-level decisions by corporators.
Key Voices:
Manoj Meek, CREDAI General Secretary:
"There must be a collective effort to devise a proper master plan, with enhanced public engagement through improved digital platforms. Addressing the depletion of green cover is critical amidst rising temperatures."
P Raju, Signature Builders:
"Effective planning is essential for balanced urban growth. Many colonies remain unincorporated after decades, reflecting BMC's shortcomings. Despite levying taxes, inadequate waste management persists, forcing residents to resort to unsuitable dumping."
Kamal Rathi, Urban Planner:
"GIS-based planning is indispensable for sustainable urban development. Current infrastructure and sewage planning cater to corporator whims rather than centralized HQ strategy, exacerbating issues like waterlogging."
Dr. S.C. Pandey, Green Activist:
"Sustainable development encompasses economic, social, and environmental harmony. Recent climatic challenges underscore the urgency for well-coordinated urban planning efforts."
