The government of India has been making continuous efforts to revive the real estate sector of the country. And in another bid forward towards it, the government of India has decided to create an online database of the Indian cities by 2024. The database will be available to everyone free of cost and will focus on all the minute details of the cities, including infrastructure, education and health facilities, etc.

However, the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry (HUA) might plan ‘Exchange of Database’ scheme under which the agencies might charge for commercial use of data.

By March 2020, the first phase of the website will launch, which will include the details of the 100 Smart Cities. In the second phase, 500 cities will be bought under the website by 2022. The ministry also said that they would have the database of 4,000 cities by 2024.

SEBI allows smart cities to issue municipal bonds

To push the smart city project even further, SEBI has allowed the smart cities to issue municipal bonds that will help in raising funds required for the smart cities. This will help in raising a large number of entries and thus the funds through their debt securities.

First smart city list to roll out by December 2019

The government will launch the first 50 smart cities by December 2019. The government has also asked the smart cities to pick one project that will have a direct effect on the quality of life of the residents. The ministry will bring out the report card of the smart cities on 2nd October 2019.

Seeking expertise

To build smart cities, the city planners got the training from Singapore based companies that will help in right guidance towards the goal. India is all set to seek guidance from Singapore in building smart cities.

The officials have stated that the Singapore based companies have revealed the interest in urban projects in Assam, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. A consortium of these companies is working towards making Amravati, the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh. Singapore based companies have also been working with the Rajasthan government to build a well-planned city in Jaipur and Udaipur.

The government has said that the smart cities will have digital control and command centers that will manage the traffic, pollution, noise pollution, garbage collection, etc.

Tier-II cities that are on the list of smart cities

In June 2018, the government came out with the rankings for the smart cities, and surprisingly Nagpur stood first followed by Vadodara and Ahmedabad. The ranking was evaluated on various parameters such as expenditure, project implementation, etc. Tier-II cities have performed very well in the rankings as compared to the metro cities.
