While the top two spots were taken by Indore and Bhopal, same as the previous year but this year they had to beat many more rivals to retain their spot. According to the survey report, Vijayawada has been named as the cleaned among the big cities having over one million populations while Mysuru came out to be cleanest cities having a population of 3 lakh to one million.
New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has emerged as the cleanest city among municipal bodies with less than three lakh population and Greater Mumbai has named as the cleanest among all state capitals. Delhi Cantt, emerged as the cleanest cantonment area, followed by Almora, Ranikhet and Nainital (all three from Uttarakhand). Surprisingly Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad has been ranked the fastest moving big city. Ghaziabad moved from 351 to 36 among cities with over 10 lakh population. And Rajasthan’s Kota has been ranked the best city in terms of 'citizens' feedback'.
This year the survey covered 4,203 cities but in 2017, it covered only 434 cities. During the Swachh Survekshan, 37.66 lakh citizens gave their feedback from across the country. The on-field survey for Swachh Survekshan was conducted by an independent agency and the data for ranking the city have been gathered from three sources that included- service level progress, direct observation by random field visits, and through citizen feedback. This year the citizen feedback has been given a higher weightage of 35 percent.
