While designing outdoor staircases it's important to keep in mind the aesthetic value, functional value and safety. So let's discuss the various designs of staircases –
Designs of staircases
1Straight Stairs
Benefit of straight staircases - They are easy to ascend or descend. Straight stairs only need to be connected at the top and bottom. It's easy to build railings for straight stairs.
Drawback of straight staircase - Use fair amount of linear space. Do not offer privacy between floors. A stair 12feet high requires a landing to break span. They are mostly preferred in shopping malls.
2L shaped stairs
Benefit of L- shaped staircases - They are also known as quarter turn stairs. L shaped stairs has a 90 degree bend created in straight stairs. This bend is created by adding a landing. They are safer to ascend or descend. These types of stairs provide visual barriers between floors. Preferably created in any corner of home may be from living area.
Drawback of L shaped staircases - Difficult to move large items from one floor to another
3 U shaped Stairs
Benefit of U shaped stairs - They are basically two parallel flights of straight stairs joined by a landing that requires 180 degree turn in the walk line. They are safer to ascend or descend.
Drawback of U shaped stairs – They are difficult to build.
4Winder Stairs
Benefits of winder Stairs – These are variation of an L shaped stairs but instead of a flat landing, they have pie shaped or triangular steps at the corner transition. These stairs requires less space. They are often used as secondary staircases. Central support is required.
Materials used to build staircase –
5Wood
Wooden staircase add aesthetic value to our garden / concrete patio. Wood is easy to work with and can be cut in any shape and size. This material can be difficult to maintain and can have longetivity issues. For long life use weather stain on wood for preventing the material from rotting, weakening and breaking. Wood is available in various texture and colors.
6Brick Stairs
They can stand in any type of weather. They are available in much type of sizes. They give a clean feel look or vintage look to home
7Concrete Stairs
Concrete stairs provide permanent solution with neutral color. Concrete can also be molded by stencils/barriers to create various patters and designs.
8 Aluminum Stairs
Aluminum stairs are quick and easy to install. They are less priced or cheap but still weather resistant and durable. Aluminum spiral stairs are used in many shops to reach to mezzanine floor. They are light in weight.
9Stone stairs
This material is difficult to work with in building stairs but ensures durability and reliability. Stone stairs have long life and easy to maintain.
