Morocco brings to mind lush and romantic fantasy. This melting-pot of various cultures has created a design vocabulary that is rich, colourful and incredibly detailed. Shraddha Jhaveri, home stylist and decor consultant, tells us how to create a mini-island of exotica in our homes.
1. The Moroccan theme lies at the antipodal end of a prim and proper interior scheme – and therefore may appear informal to some.
2. This style is all about bold colours and high contrast, mostly from the warm end of the palette: pinks, oranges and yellows, offset with neutral shades and small shots of blue and green.
Geomtric patterns are seen across a variety of objects in this exotic theme.
3. Architectural details such as arched doorways and screens will only reinforce this theme.
4. Team delicately carved side tables, chests and seaters with plush-upholstered couches and floor cushions. Go for damask designs and intricate geometric patterns.
5. Opt for lantern-style light fixtures: either a large, solitary statement piece, or a clutch of them suspended as a cluster.
6. The areas is known for metalwork, so look out for metal-framed mirror, vases and other decorative accents.
The Morrocan style is represented by metalwork, colourful elements, fretted screens and arches.
7. Another highlight is Moroccan design carpets and rugs that are inspired by famous tribal design styles, embroideries and weaving styles.
8. Installing murals of intricately-patterned tiles on walls, or laying them on the floor, will give a large Moroccan dose to your space. Another option is pattern your walls with store-bought stencils.
