With today’s fast paced life, most of us probably sit and enjoy the last meal of the day together - dinner. Hence, it is vital to have a place that is conducive for good vibes and healthy eating. The space need not be a large one but a warm and happy space where pleasant conversations can happen over meals. Vastu and feng shui consultant Rashi Gaur lists few things to keep in mind to maximize the positivity of your dining space.

1.  The placement and shape of the dining table plays a vital role in vastu. East and West are both considered perfect zones to have a dining room. As far as shapes are concerned a round or a square table is considered to spread positive energy, offering more vitality. A rectangle or oval shape table makes for softer, more laid back meals. If you choose a square or rectangular table, make sure that the corners are softened and not sharp and pointy as they can send out poison arrows to all those who spend time in that room. You should completely avoid irregular and L-shaped tables to stay away from negative energies.

2.  Do not let guests sit facing the pointed edge of the table or the toilet door during dinner time. Also, eating under an exposed overhead beam is a complete no-no as this brings animosity and bad vibes.

3.  Do not serve in chipped crockery as this can seriously interfere with the luck of abundance. Go through your porcelain and get rid of anything that is chipped, cracked or broken. Do not use it for yourself or the guests. Also, chairs should be high backed and lend you a good support while you eat.

4.  Surfaces play an important role in setting the environment. Lighter tones and soft woods like pine and cedar helps in setting a relaxed environment. For a more formal atmosphere, you can use darker tones like deep mahogany and dark teak. Marble and glass tops create fast moving energy, which can be way too exciting to handle. You can opt ones that suits your family the most.

5.  While choosing colours for table linen and napkins, colours like red, fuchsia and orange are your options as it brings passion and romance, green adds vitality, yellow brings warmth, white and grey are perfect for a formal affair and blue enhances communication.

6.  Soothing tones are preferable for dining room furniture. If you want a bright colour tone for dining chairs like red or orange, keep the walls muted to create the perfect balance of yin and yang (negative and positive energy). Opt for smooth fabrics and surfaces to enhance quick cleaning.

7.  Avoid rugs and carpets as natural floors are easier to clean and they never let the energy become stagnant. This is called ‘The Zone of Health’.

8.  Auspicious art depicting fresh fruits and vegetables are wonderful to have around the dining area. Also, you can have a mirror reflecting the dining table. This is one of the most auspicious ways to attract abundance into the house.
