Wood has never really gone out of style. There is always someone who is gripped by its unique grains, or its sculptural quality, or its sturdiness... Paying homage to this multifaceted material, architects Anu Chauhan and Prashant Chauhan of ZERO9 design and architecture studio share tips on exploring the warm and affable nature of wood for your homes.
1. Keep it simple: Wood is inherently warm because of its exclusive grains; it signifies life. Keep the tampering to a minimal by treating it with a natural polish. Exposing the knots and grains makes a stronger statement than veneered or laminated wood.
2. Accentuate the antique quality: Get that artefact-look by painting the wooden piece and then scraping it off roughly. You may also paint is with polish and insert gold linings in the veins, and finish it with a final coat of polish to up the royal quotient.
3. Think best out of waste: Give an old bark of tree a makeover by cleaning it, polishing it and placing a glass over it to make an arty table. Similarly, you can scatter similar pieces as casual seating around your garden or near the indoor bar.
4. Explore the sculptural quality of wood and mould it into an abstract piece of accessory that people will definitely take note of and admire: On a similar note, chop a long piece of sleeper wood and place it vertically in your garden as an installation. Admire its sculptural quality as it blends well with the surrounding green. Throw some pebbles around it to complete the look.
6. Don’t junk the ‘junk’: Paint your grandmother’s old wooden trunk in a bright hue, or scrape it to accentuate the old-world charm. Use it in its new avatar as centre table, for storage, or even as a pouffe by placing a gaddi over it.
7. Wood is versatile: Feel free to add brass corner edgings to add charm and royalty to your wooden piece. On the other hand, pair it with steel to create a contemporary piece. Wood can be easily teamed with glass, metal mesh, cane, fabric and other materials.
8. Reuse: Purchase old wooden furniture from flea markets/local markets, and simply paint it or polish it to add a vintage touch to your home.
