Jaalis have been used in traditional homes since ancient times. Interior designer Sneha Samtani gives unique tips on how it can be used in homes as a décor element.
- You can use jaalis on the ceiling. All you need to do is put gypsum board on the ceiling. Then put a source of light and cover it with wooden jaalis. This defines height and gives an attractive look to the space.
- Another traditional way to make use of jaalis is to use it in partition. If you have a big living room, the jaali partition can be used to divide spaces into entertainment area or children’s play area.
- For penthouse like spaces, the gap near the staircase is always plain and empty. Highlight this space with jaalis and ensure to colour, polish or use lights. This acts like a mural near the staircase area and gives a soothing feel.
- Enhance the space near the lock and handle on your doors with a jaali panel. A mirror like laminate can be used here with jaali above it. You can use this kind of panel to highlight your bedroom door.
- Readymade cutout jaalis can be painted and fixed either in the living room or near the television unit. This gives a design element to the space.
- Frames of mirrors can be adorned with jaalis. You can either purchase or colour it and attach a mirror to it. These jaalis can also be used without the mirror during festivals. Hang them to complete the festive look in the house.
- Ditch photo frames near the corridor passage area and enhance it with a jaali frame for a contemporary twist.
- For the bedroom area near the headboard you can use jaalis and indirect lighting instead of ribbon pattern. This gives an attractive feel to the space.
