Architect Onal Kothari shares simple tips to add a touch of glam to your staircase.

  1. Plan: For every home renovation, planning is always the first and important step for remodelling your existing stairways. Firstly, determine the style you would like to have for your stairs. Do you need an inbuilt storage capacity incorporated in your stairs? etc. Plan well before you execute.
  2. Desired style: Do a thorough research offline and online, scroll through photographs and then finalize the style that matches your lifestyle and home spaces.
  3. Permits: Check whether your work does not affect your surrounded zones. If you own an apartment with double or plus storey home connected by internal staircase, it is better to keep your council informed about your actions.
  4. Basics: The first action required for staircase designing is to take a note on riser and trade. For this, count the height to cover and the steps required to reach.
  5. Landing step: For a comfortable climbing process, every high rise staircase has landing steps after certain steps. It is important to note this factor while designing any staircase.
  6. Screwing and material selection It is important to check newel posts, handrails or the base rails height during the installation process. Contemporary materials in trends for staircase include glass panels, wooden hanging steps and spindles.
  7. Lights: As staircase is the important functional design element of your home, it would be great if you can jazz up the area with additional lights.
  8. Decor: You can decorate the whole staircase zone with perfect hanging decors or art works on either side of the wall leading to the floor. You can also decorate the space with staircase mouldings or water walkway below.
