A toaster is an essential part of your kitchen, and as with all food appliances, maintenance become vital as it is directly connected with what your family eats every morning. Ramesh Chembath, Business Head – Kitchen Appliances, Usha International, tells you the precautions that need to be taken to make the toaster last longer.
1. Before cleaning the toaster, always disconnect the power supply to avoid any untoward incident. Make sure you unplug the toaster from the electrical outlet before removing the bread jammed in the slots to avoid injuries. As this is an electrical appliance, keep it away from the reach of children.
2. Always wipe the outer area of the toaster with a soft dry cloth once the toaster cools down. Never use metal polish as this may damage the outer covering.
3. Accumulated bread crumbs should be removed at least once a week by removing the crumb tray from the bottom and cleaning it regularly. Ensure the crumb tray is closed properly before using it again.
4. Ensure that the bread slices stick out slightly when you fill the toaster. This will make it easier to remove the toast when it is ready.
5. Unplug the appliance when not in use to save electricity and any possible malfunction.
6. Keep the appliance away from a gas cooker or a heated oven and the power cord away from hot surfaces. This will avert major disasters such as fire or related accidents. Also, operate the toaster from a distance from curtains or any combustible objects.
7. The appliance should not be immersed in water or any liquid. This may damage the product.
8. Use the appliance on a stable work surface and allow the appliance to cool down before storing it. Once cooled, remove the plug from the socket. This makes it ready to the next use.
