You must be quite excited about the new flooring you just got at your home. However, its losing luster could dull your happiness as well. Check out the following tips for efficient floor cleaning at home from Geetesh Saraf…
- The basic rule to be followed for floor cleaning: keep it dry. Use chemicals in a limited quantity and take professional cleaning help once or twice a month.
- Wooden/laminated floors should be cleaned with plain water with a damp cloth, followed by wiping with a dry one. If the floor has been damaged in a particular area, avoid using a damp cloth there. Alcohol and other spills should be mopped immediately.
- Vitrified tiles are resistant all chemicals (except hydrofluoric acid and its derivatives). Therefore, detergents and cleaning agents available in the market can be used safely on them. These, too, can be cleaned with a damp cloth and then a dry cloth.
- Both glazed and unglazed ceramic tiles can be cleaned using plain water and any tile cleaner. If using cleaning solution, follow up with a rinse of clean water.
- Concrete floors are used in public places and industrial areas which require strong floor base. These have simple cleaning requirements and can be cleaned by simple broom and wet cloth. However if the floor has epoxy coatings, you will require professional cleaning help.
- Vinyl floors will benefit from daily sweeping as dust has an abrasive action on the material. Clean up spills right away. Use mild detergents for an everyday swab.
- Both marble and granite floors need mild dishwashing soap that is pH neutral, ie it is neither acidic nor basic. Therefore, vinegar – which is acidic – is a strict no-no. Use a soft clean mop and short, gentle strokes. Rinse-mop the floor with water. Buffing with a microfiber cloth will bring up the shine.
- For wall-to-wall carpet floor, vacuum cleaning is important. You may also take professional help once in three months for shampooing.
