Feature walls are a tried-and-tested way of creating 'punctuations' in a decorative scheme. These can stand by themselves or serve as a strong background to draw attention to an important object, such as a painting. Architect ManMohan Khanna tells us about the different ways you can create these impact elements.

  1. Smooth texture paints: These are specialty paints that are applied over the plaster walls. They come in various textures such as stucco and ripples.
  2. Rough textures with flakes and granules: Unlike smooth textures, these actually create rough-to-touch finishes. This can be done, for example, through addition of sand.
  3. Cladding: You 'clad' your wall when you fix any item or material on it. Most popular type of cladding uses stone such as granite and marble.
  4. Hard panelling: Here, panels of materials such as wood and plywood (with veneer or polish), PVC and WPC (Wood Plastic Composition) are fixed on walls. Glass is also one more material that can be used for panelling. It has many options: stained glass, mirror glass, textured glass, engraved glass, etched glass, etc.
A rough-textured wall lends a lovely brooding and earthy feel to this setting.
  5. Specialized fabric panelling: Insulating materials like thermo-freez and soft board are covered with tapestry or cloth, and manufactured as panels. These are usually used in auditoriums, museums, sound recording studios, cinema halls and music rooms for decoration as well as insulation.
  6. Regular fabric covering: Any type of fabric, when framed and fixed on the wall, forms what is called as fabric covering. These are available in various materials like jute, satin, silk, tapestry, plastic, nylon, velvet and brocade.
  7. Wallpaper: This is another popular option, with lovely, off-the-shelf offerings. The latest additions to the vinyl wallpaper family are the PU (polyurethane) based and 3D wallpaper. Customized wallpapers, too, are all the rage nowadays since they can be modified as per the needs of the customer.
