A garden umbrella adds a great deal to the aesthetic quotient of an outdoor space – which is all the more reason to keep it looking good. Purushotham Venkatesh, Managing Director, Megavent Technologies Pvt Ltd, gives simple tips to maintain this piece of furniture that has to brave weather and pests alike.

  1. It is important to keep the garden umbrella clean. Ensure that you wipe it with a dry cloth. You can use wet cloth if you have the stainless steel or aluminium option.
  2. The fabric is mostly detachable. So make sure that you remove the fabric, wash it and let it dry completely before using it again..
  3. For lever-based umbrellas, it is important to oil the mechanism. Greasing the lever area prevents it from getting rusted.
  4. The base is also detachable. When not in use, remove, clean and store it indoors. Alternatively, you can pack it neatly and store it outdoors as well.
  5. If the umbrella has been used frequently, ensure that you check for nests or hives. If you find some, remove them carefully.
  6. Avoid using harsh chemicals to clean the umbrella frame as it may damage its finish.
  7. In the first instance of bad weather, make sure you remove the umbrella as it cannot withstand such conditions. While closing your umbrella, ensure that it is in the deadlock position. This prevents movement of the umbrella. Use a good cover if you plan to store it outdoors. Depending on the material used for the umbrella cover, the umbrella can either be washed in the machine or with a clean cloth. Check the instructions carefully before you wash it to prevent any kind of damage.
