Rich and heritage home designs, comprising of traditional built-in single, double or triple levels, deeply connects us to our roots. These have details and history that catches attention instantly. On the other hand, contemporary houses have more open spaces, simplified furniture and less ornamentation. Architect Alok Bhagat shares some tips to change your home to contemporary from traditional style.
- Less is more in contemporary design: Remove unnecessary items from your rooms. Decor products displayed in your space should be minimal yet attractive.
- Threesome colour palette: Create colour combinations with only 3-4 colours within the space or in the façade. Colours contrasting nature or natural elements would always be a positive point.
- Go minimalistic: Replace heavily detailed items such as ornamental furniture, decorative curtains, lighting fixtures or other ‘carved or decorative’ items with lighter and more streamlined shades that look more prominent in the room.
- Replace ornamental windows: It is recommended to change the existing ornamental windows. Replace single-pane wooden frames, ornamental grills with aluminium frames. If your design permits, go for full-length double-pane windows. These are modern as well as energy- efficient.
- Link: Open up spaces in such a way that it feels more connected to each other. For example, demolish the wall between the kitchen and dining area. Not only architects but your structural consultant can also help you to determine different options for home makeover.
- Flooring: This plays an important role in creating space of certain styles. Geometric designs, wooden palette and fabrics are trending floor products for year 2017.
- Ceiling: Raise the height of the ceiling frames to make living spaces more voluminous.
