Your washing machine is your hardworking homecare companion. Appliance expert Seema Maheshwari gives us simple tips to ensure it stays in good working condition.

1. Fill the machine only up to its capacity: Different washing machines have different loading capacities. So ensure you read the manual carefully and load it accordingly. It is better to wash clothes in batches. At no point should you overload the machine. This may damage the machine permanently.

2. Check the detergent for its type and quality: Good quality detergents are important both, for the machine as well as clothes. Always use softener, bleach and detergents recommended by the manufacturer. Determine the right amount of detergent necessary for the wash as using more than necessary will lead to wastage of water. Similarly, less quantity may result in unclean clothes.

3. Understand your machine settings: Acquaint yourself with the different settings (hot, cold, normal) of the washing machine before use as selecting the right setting will mean achieving the desired result in the shortest time, and consequently less stress on the machine. If there are extremely soiled clothes, you will need to use the hot cycle and for less stains, regular or cold cycle is preferable.

Ensure that the water intake works properly for the proper functioning of the machine. Also see that it is connected to a power supply with adequate amperage. Overloading is a common mistake, which, over time, leads to a damaged machine.

4. Check the floor level: At times you may encounter intolerable noise during the washing process. This happens due to uneven floors. Your machine may vibrate back and forth leading to water spillage as well. Therefore, ensure that the floor level is correct to avoid damage or injuries.

5. Run the empty cycles: As with any other appliance, the washing machine requires cleaning as well. For this, run the machine with bleach or baking soda minus any clothes, or with a company-recommended descaling powder. This process will get rid of dust and odor accumulated in the tub. It is recommended that you do this once a month.

6. Clean the internal portions: Regular washing leads to accumulation of dust in the lint pipe, detergent case and water pipes. Ensure you clean them regularly to limit its wear and tear to the minimum.

7. Do not delay the repairs: In case of repairs, consult an authorized technician immediately. Any delay in repairs would incur a cost and permanent damage of the product.
