Awnings play an important role in enhancing the outdoor space. Manoj Nayak, Proprietor, Shelter Enterprises, tells us the different factors to look out for before you purchase this shading device.
- To begin with, determine the purpose of the awning. Is it for protection from sun or rain or just to provide shade? This factor will help you select the right awning according to your needs.
- Secondly, the location where you plan to install the awning is very important. It could be above the door or deck. Make sure that the selected location fits your requirements. Awning can be mounted under the soffit, exterior wall, roof, etc. The height will vary depending on where it is mounted.
- Size is another most important aspect to be taken care of. To get more protection, you can opt for big-size awnings.
- Check the fabric used for awnings. As awnings are used outdoors and will be exposed to different weather conditions, PVC-coated fabric is preferable because it is durable and can last for 5 – 10 years. An aluminium option is also available. This is sturdy and easy to maintain. Ensure to select the one that meets your needs. You can check with the salesman if the fabric and walls of the awnings have been treated with ultra violet inhibitors for protection from sunrays. It should also be resistant to mildew, rot and fire.
- Look for features like frames that have powder coating as this will safeguard the frame from getting rusted. Another factor to look out for is the truss. Make sure that it has reinforced injection moulded plastic caps to prevent bending. Awnings should also have adjustable legs for uneven surfaces or sloped sites. For ease of leg adjustment, look for a gentle touch push button design.
- There are two types of awnings namely fixed and retractable. The fixed option is preferred for location that is sunny and warm throughout the year. Similarly, retractable awnings can be used to control sunlight entering the house during cold or sunny weather. Opt for one that suits your needs.
- Price is another deciding factor that depends on the size of the awning. The smaller the size higher is the price because the cost of transportation, materials, etc. is more compared to the cost of installing a big-size awning.
