A mattress can last for 7 – 8 years depending on its usage, says Saurabh Tewary, Area Branch Manager, Kurlon. He gives us some tips on how to maintain the mattress that can help you improve your quality of sleep.
1. Change the direction of the mattress every 2 – 3 weeks. Do this to avoid the depressions that result owing to constant body weight.
2. You will notice that the mattress tends to become uneven over a period of time. Therefore, depending on usage, you should ideally change or replace the mattress every 7 – 8 years.
3. Never fold, stand or bend the mattress. As mattresses are quite heavy, you should not attempt to lift or move one by yourself. Take someone's help if required. By doing this, you will avert an injury to yourself and damage to the mattress.
4. Using a mattress protector will prevent stains and spills, especially if you have small kids around.
5. Place it in the sunlight every 2 weeks to get rid of dust particles and mites.
6. Mattresses are not fire or flame resistant. Take care that you never expose it to an open flame or smoke on it.
7. Avoid using harsh chemicals to clean the stains on the mattress. Dry cleaning should be completely avoided as chemicals will destroy the components of the mattress. Use mild soap or detergent or clean cotton cloth dipped in cold water to clean stains.
