A large wall can be the perfect canvas for a creative mind. Although walls are deemed to be an uninteresting feature of a space, they form a backdrop for a variety of design elements. Apart from just being a division between two rooms or providing an opening for air and light, walls can be transformed into a design feature with interesting colours and textures. Shami Goregaoker, Project Manager and design strategist, GA design reveals tips to dress up your walls to give it a unique dimension.

  1. Create a highly animated wall experience or leave it as a subtle backdrop to enhance the décor. Taking into consideration the natural light flowing into the room and the specific function of the space, there are various creative options to design an expressive wall.
  2. The most widely used tip to perk up a bare wall is the use of a contrasting colour which is likely to instantly catch the eye. Taking this forward, you can use texture paint to create innumerable looks ranging from rustic to metallic.
  3. An increasingly common trend to dress up a wall is the use of wallpaper. With its infinite design options, wallpaper is easy to install as well as easy to change. Wallpapers can be used for a wide range of spaces to create various looks, be it a cosy family room, a serious study space, an intimate bedroom, a lively entertainment room or even an entrance lobby. With the advancement of technology, wallpapers are now available with acoustic properties as well as with 3D and metallic effect.
  4. Another popular idea to enhance the visual aesthetic of a room is wall art which can be more varied and personalized. As architecture and interior design is often a symbiosis between a designer and an artist, together they can create a beautifully engaging space. Wall art is often used to inspire the occupants and can be customized to the size and scale of the space.
  5. Lighting can also be used to create an expressive wall. Cove lighting, wall washers, spot lights and focused lights, all help to create a mystifying look which can have a huge impact on the décor of the room.
  6. Other most commonly used options to jazz up a wall is to prop it up with picture frames, paintings, mirrors or other art work. Tiling and paneling create a look that is somewhat close to the contemporary style of design, but nevertheless with the same intent.
