Accent pieces act mainly as a contrasting or eye-catching element, and therefore often are a flash of madness in a conservatively furnished room, or a touch of classical elegance in an exotic setting. They ensure that the room speaks both to you and about you. Manjari Thanawala, Creative Head, Chesterfield Furniture, says they possess the ability to completely transform a space and make it your own. Here’s how…
1. Chair flair: Look for a chair that has an interesting form or colour. From the sleek upholstery of a Parsons chair to the classic styling of a wingback chair, accent chairs provide seating that has style to spare. Some chairs, which even border on the bizarre, will also work wonderfully well for the intrepid decorator.
2. Tantalizing tables: Let a striking centre table or dining table be the star of the space. Look out once more for interesting materials/material combinations, colours and finishes. Occasional tables, again with interesting form or work – such as inlay or paint – serve well as decor anchors. They can be used by themselves or teamed with accessories.
3. Hue help: Experiment with pops of colour. It will help to break the monotony of the room. Contrast colours such as dark, neutral or solid tone can also be used for the same. Also, to give an orderly appearance, use furniture in one pattern or colour. If the room looks busy, opt for a prominent colour that complements what is already part of the room.
4. Finesse with furnishings: To give dimension to your furniture, throw pillows and blankets can be used. This ensures that you can replace them whenever you are bored with the present theme as they are not very expensive.
5. Art attack: Use art to great effect, but use too many – and you may lose the plot. Make sure you draw attention to the piece by lighting it up adequately.
6. Thoughtful accessorization: As with art, accessories, too, create the desired impact pieces when used with restraint. For instance, you can use a large framed mirror, or a clutch of smaller versions used as a ‘collage’. On the other hand, an entrance will look striking if you use a statement piece with an outstanding shape or colour.
