Originating in countries north of the Mediterranean Sea, including Spain, Greece and Italy, the Mediterranean style touches everything from simple details – such as red clay tile roofing – to larger elements like exposed wooden beams and gleaming marble flooring. Interior designer Ruchi Sabharwal of Ruchi S Design tells us how to bring this theme home…
1. This style is great when there is large, free space, with a good ceiling height and big windows – architectural details that infuse the volume with a laidback, breezy feel.
2. The style evokes the colours of the sun and the sea: white teamed with blues and greens is a proven combination. Vibrant and earthy colours such as yellows and terracotta can also be used.
Soft sheers, burnished metal, native pottery, rough-textured walls and mosaic tiles are distinguishing properties of a Mediterranean theme.
3. This style revels in textures contrasted with soft, billowy fabrics: sheer curtains, exposed wooden beams, roughly-finished tiles and plain planks for flooring and rudely-plastered walls.
4. Mosaic tile designs are an important facet of a Mediterranean interior. Include them as permanent installations (floor or kitchen backsplash) or accessories (clothes hooks, mirror frame or a tabletop).
5. Metals like copper, bronze and wrought-iron will give more depth to your interiors. You can use them as an option for your hardware-related needs.
6. The region uses a lot of pinewood, so opt for it while making furniture.
