Let’s face it. As children, we have been fascinated by anything that needs climbing: trees, treehouses, bunk beds... Perhaps because they’re connected to a bit of adventure and fantasy. Well, trees are meant for climbing and treehouses can’t be anywhere but on trees. But what about bunk beds? Are they all they’re cut out to be? While all the children will yell an emphatic ‘Aye!’, Roheena Napgpal, who specializes in children’s furniture and has designed many a kid’s room, says a firm ‘Nay!’. Bunk beds are a bad idea for Indian homes. Period.

  1. The height of a room is not more than 9.5 feet.
  2. The fans are commonplace in Indian homes. Thus, the effective height becomes 8 feet.
  3. Children can reach the fans since the rooms aren’t broad.
  4. There have been cases of children toppling down from the upper bunk while sleeping, or climbing in and out.
  5. It’s easier to fetch a glass of water or go to the bathroom from the lower bed in your sleep.
  6. In over 90% of cases, bunk beds become glorified toy storages within 6 months of use when the novelty wears off. They are used for play but not for sleep.
