Rugs enhance the decorative quotient of a space. Ahmedabad-based interior designer Shalini Mishra talks about the things to keep in mind while purchasing a rug.
1. First determine the location where you are going to place the rug and who will use it. If you have pets or children, choose one that is durable. Synthetic and wool are some of the durable options. Avoid shag rag or raised pile if elderly people use the space.
2. Size is another important factor to be considered while selecting a rug. Ensure that you select a size that covers your furniture. Small size rugs look good in a larger space.
3. Material and pattern should also be looked at and selected according to the choice of space. For example, horizontal stripes on rugs make narrow space look wide.
4. Colour also plays an important role in rugs. Opt for a neutral or single colour if there are already too many colours in the space. Keep the colour of the walls and floors in mind while choosing rugs. On the other hand, you can choose bright colour or bold pattern rugs to give a new dimension to a space.
5. Do not overlook the texture of the rugs. Finishes like velvet or sisal enhance the look of a space. You can also experiment with various shapes of rugs such as rectangle, circle, etc. Round rugs look great at the entrance.
6. Rug pad prevents slippage, wear and tear and absorbs moisture among other factors. Therefore choose the appropriate rug pad. For example, a thin polyester fabric coated with adhesive prevents colour bleeding of the rug.
