Paving material falls under what is known as the 'hardscape' of your garden space. That is, portions that are not covered by the greens. Architect Mrunmayi Wadwekar lists out the various material options that are available to us...

1Brick:

It is the most versatile and classic material to use for paving. It is suitable for a refined, natural setting. Even worn-out brick pavers have their own charm. Bricks are durable and low in maintenance. Brick pavers are made out of clay pressed in form of blocks and can be found in more natural hues and shades. However, these are among the costlier alternatives. To reduce cost and achieve a distinctive look, use salvaged bricks or broken bricks laid a patterns.

2Concrete blocks:

Concrete pavers are concrete blocks moulded in a variety of shapes, with pigments and dyes added for colouring. They are easy to maintain and last long.

3Poured concrete:

This involves pouring concrete on the surface. Again, pigments can be added to give a specific colour and texture. However, this is prone to cracks once the top coat wears off. While the material itself is not expensive, the labour and other paraphernalia required to create such a surface, are.

4Stone:

This is the most durable and luxurious of paving materials. It has a long life, and is available in various sizes, textures, finishes and colours. From irregular-shaped stones to properly-dressed ones, every variety looks good. While selecting stone, do not select a smooth-finish one which can become slippery when wet. Stone can be a costly material but proves economical in the long run.

5Tile:

Though options abound when it comes to looks, finishes, colours, etc, tiles are delicate and should not be used in places of heavy vehicle and foot traffic.

6Wood-finish tiles:

Synthetic wood finish tiles are made of resin and recycled wood. They are a godsend when it comes to adhering to a wooden outdoor look as they are durable and waterproof. The flipside is that they are quite expensive and require maintenance.
