Living in an urban area with no terrace and but just a small balcony? No problem. Interior Designer AkankshaBhardwaj shares some amazingly awesome creative ideas to give your little balcony a makeover it deserves this monsoon.
- Plants: Living in modern townships and missing the greenery? Add-up a cheerful ambience to your balcony with a small outdoor garden. Go for plant pots in different sizes and springy colors, and hang them vertically on the walls or on balcony's edge. The flowering plants along with crawlers would also give a bold and attractive look to the balcony railings.
a. For Monsoon: To keep the plants permanently in the balcony during monsoon, ensure some awning. You can make it a big large to prevent excessive water—while keeping the plants protected from heavy rains.
- Flooring: You can always try the much-coveted wooden floor or opt for an artificial grass carpet. Wood decking with decorative pebbles added to the periphery for an organic effect is also trending.
a. For Monsoon: Artificial grass won't get negatively affected with heavy rains. However ensure a good drainage system for the turf so that it doesn't remain all wet for long.
- Furniture:Smaller the balcony, tiny the furniture. Opt for one or two chairs only; but, remember to choose them in cheerful colors so that they brighten the balcony's atmosphere. Add a few cushions to the chairs as well.
a. For Monsoon: Go for comfortable, weatherproof seating such as bistro sets, deck chairs or benches to this area. You can also add a bean bag or a plush two-seater.
- Accessorize your balcony: Put a coffee table with your favorite magazines and flowering plants. You can also place a pot of herbs like mint, lavender or thyme to turn up the mood. Place a lamp or two to enhance the space.
a. For Monsoon: Use the furniture which won't get damp, moist or rusted in monsoons. If you're using iron furniture, make sure to get it painted.
- Connecting the indoors with outdoors: A great technique for making a small balcony appear larger is to connect the indoors with the outdoors. Blurring the lines between your indoor space and balcony space can be easily done by using the same colour scheme or style.
a. For Monsoon: Colors like bright yellow, orange, and fluorescents look very attractive during monsoons. However for permanent wall colors, you may go with colors of your choice—subtle, vibrant, bold, warm or cool.
