As with all outdoor elements, awnings, too, are exposed to the sun, rain, birds, etc. Maintaining them, therefore, becomes quite important. Manoj Nayak, Proprietor, Shelter Enterprises, gives simple tips to maintain awnings.
- If your PVC-coated awning fabric becomes dusty, clean it with water once a month. The surface of this type of awning is very smooth that does not allow dust to settle. So cleaning it once a month is fine.
- For stains and mildew, ensure that you use specialized cleaners that are meant to clean awnings only. Scrubbing should be avoided completely because it may damage the water-resistant finish on the fabric.
- Ensure that the awning is not torn anywhere. Check thoroughly for wear and tear. To keep the awning from further damage, repair it immediately.
- You should not store the awning if it is wet. Wait till it is completely dry or else it may develop mildew or lead to rotting. Also, ensure both the inner and outer side of the awning is completely dry before it is stored.
- It is better to retract the awning during heavy winds or storms. On the other hand, if there is enough room for water to move on the ground, you can leave it open. Monitor the awnings regularly to ensure there is no 'ponding' of water.
