A paver or paving material is technically the material used as a surface outside the house which is not covered by green spaces. While there are various materials for paving, your selection will depend on the where the area to be paved is located, says architect Mrunmayi Wadwekar.

1. If the paving is to be done in driveway, it is logical to have a heavier material like stone or concrete to sustain weight of the vehicles and constant pedestrian movement.

2. If the material is to be placed in the garden where there is occasional walking then you can easily opt for bricks or stone blocks.

3. If the surface is partially shaded – such as a patio or a pavilion in a garden – then treated wood can be used as paving.

4. Nowadays flooring made of vinyl and plastic – which look like wood – are also available. These can be used around pool areas to give it a distinctive look.

5. Apart from the 'look' factor, durability and maintenance also needs to be considered while selecting the material.
