Want to have good quality sleep? Much of that would depend on the mattress. Saurabh Tewary, Area Branch Manager, Kurlon, tells us about the different types of mattresses and what to look out for while buying one for yourself.
1. Select the mattress as per your weight, body shape and age. Body resistance changes with age. Therefore, people in their old age should opt for a firm mattress.
2. Medical issues also come into play while choosing a mattress. Be sure to tell the people at the store about any back or health-related problems.
3. The size of the mattress and room should also be taken into consideration. As mattresses are available in different sizes and shapes, you need to purchase one that does not cramp up your room.
4. Know your preference of mattress before you visit the store. For this, research well and set aside a budget and ensure that you get the right kind within your budget as you will be spending a generous period of time on this investment. An important factor to consider is sleeping habits: if your partner is a restless sleeper and you aren't (or vice versa), choose a mattress that doesn't allow the movement to 'carry forward' too much.
5. While at the store, ensure that you touch, smell and lie down on the mattress before purchasing it. When you lie on the mattress, there should be no gap between the mattress and your back. Always opt for a mattress that will hold your spine straight when you are in a sleeping position.
PU foam: This is normal foam.
Memory foam (viscoelastic foam): This was initially a patent of NASA and used by astronauts and for aircraft usage. Gradually, the patent was done away with and it was made available for commercial use. The main property is that the body pressure is evenly distributed and since it is flexible, the mattress comes back to its original shape once the body pressure is released. This is a luxury factor too.
Bonded foam: This ensures maximum firmness and is used at the base of the mattress.
Rubberized coir mattresses: Kurlon is a pioneer of coir mattresses. Coir is cool, eco-friendly and 100 % natural product extracted from the coconut shell. It helps in keeping the body cool. Another product, latex is a natural rubber that is added to the mattress to add a bouncing property in the rubberized coir mattress.
Pocket spring mattress
In this type of mattress, the alignment of springs is independent. Therefore, if your partner moves tosses and turns too much while sleeping, you will not be affected by his movement.
Bonnell spring mattresses
In contrast to the pocket spring mattresses, the alignment of springs is connected here.
