Wooden furniture and pieces are commonly found in everyone’s house. They look timeless, are durable, strong and in trend. There are different kinds of wood being used in furniture. These are selected as per their availability and sustainability in varied weather conditions, and the kind of furniture to be used indoor or outdoor. Mohit Mishra, Founder, Urban Upgrade Interiors, lists some of the wooden formats commonly in use.
1 Teak wood
This is the most common type of wood used in furniture, cabinets, door frames and decorative items. It is produced locally from Kerala as well as imported from Burma and Ghana. The main characteristics of teak wood are its cost, strength and durability.
2Cedar wood
Also known as Marandi, it is mainly imported from Malaysia. Cedar wood is a great option to make wooden accessories, decorative items, shoe racks and trunks. The best part about this wood is that it requires minimum maintenance and is aesthetically appealing.
3 Rosewood
Found majorly in Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Karnataka, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh, rosewood is also known as sheesham. It can be used in different polishes and finishes and is the most preferred wood used in furniture. Although it is a bit expensive, it is durable enough to withstand various temperature conditions along with being termite-resistant. It can be used to make sofa and dining sets, bedroom, kitchen cabinets and even flooring. In fact, there are several musical instruments that are made from sheesham.
4Satin wood
If you are looking to give a classy or vintage look to your furniture, satin wood is the best option. It has a polished look and can be given any pattern or finish. Satin wood is high on maintenance and is found in central and southern part of India. It is hard and long-lasting and can be used to make decorative items and furniture.
5Sal wood
This is a type of timber available in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It can withstand underground conditions, is water and termite resistant. Sal wood is commonly used in window, door frames and beams.
