Flat areas – window sills, counters, consoles – have great scope for creating tablescapes, tiny arrangements that can take something from boring to charming. Stylist Tulsi Mehta gives you 5 ways of uplifting the decor quotient of your home.

Window to Style
Deep spacious sills can be converted into charming decor islands with a few carefully selected accessories. In this set-up, the tall window is complimented by round pendant lights, which hover over a simple arrangement of books, greens and an artefact. The coffee table in front of the sofa gets a dose of style with a platter holding three cube candles: simple yet effective.

Monochrome Magic
A monochromatic colour scheme can be uplifted with strong forms and judicious shots of colour through accessorization. Here, the striking organic wall art is complemented by a dry arrangement on the side table, which, in turn, gets teamed with candlestands whose form prevent them melding into the background. The stillness of the monochromatic palette is only broken by a splash of red color of fresh flowers strategically placed on centre table.

Creating little arrangements around a theme is always fun. This one, which would suit an outdoor setting beautifully, is inspired by everything aquatic. The take-off point, of course, is the colour blue of the sofa. The table holds simple jar candles which stand on a bed of pebbles. Facing them is a shoal of angel fish. The plant calls to mind sea kelp.

1. Silk sofa, Rs 73,900;
2. Sacha coffee table, Rs 14,500;

Bold & Beautiful
Red. Make a striking statement in the house by bringing in this bold hue inside. A wall with red paint can be one of the accent walls in the room with home accessories that go well with the colour. A contemporary dark wood console against a vibrant-hued wall, a simple asymmetrical arrangement of decorative items, a nice abstract painting, and a comforting lounge chair next to the console — make for a modern but cosy corner.

Softy Indulgent
There's something about white and blue that's just soothing to the eyes. Add a bunch of flowers, and the laidback feeling becomes even more pronounced. A lovely lampshade, an exotic lampbase, soft glints of coloured glass, little knick-knacks…all against a rug-turned wall-covering create a setting that is full of narrative. Create a more indulgent feeling by having the right choice of tea and cookies, perfectly arranged in a tray… that makes it a lovely decor too!
