Do you have a plasma TV and planning to upgrade to an LED? Appliance expert Seema Maheshwari gives you the difference between these two options to ensure you invest in the right TV.
1. Technology: Plasma is a relatively old technology. As the current used to form the plasma is mostly given off as infrared heat, it uses a lot more electricity than LED-lit LCD (or simply put, LED) TVs. Plasma screen TVs are believed to have better picture quality (mostly due to deeper blacks). LED TVs are slimmer and more easily available, but also more expensive.
2. Picture quality: Plasma TVs tend to have deeper blacks and stable colour over the screen's breadth from a variety of angles, leading to smoother, more natural images than seen on LED screens. Plasma screens also displays fast motion without blur or ghosting.
3. Brightness: LED TVs are the brightest available. They are capable of 100 foot-lamberts, although this is bright enough to cause eye fatigue in a dark room. Plasmas are less bright, so they might be more difficult to see in a bright room and will dim over time.
4. Sound quality and size: LED TVs tend to have poorer sound quality as they are thinner (LED screens are the slimmest available). The screen size can range from a couple of inches to 90 inches. On the other hand, plasma screens normally range from 42 inches to approximately 65 inches. Plasma screens also outweigh LED screens.
5. Energy efficiency: Plasma TVs are less energy efficient than LED TVs.
