A kitchen is a part of the house where we spend the least amount of time. However the challenge is to see to it that it is productive and effective in that small period of time. Architect Mrunmayi Wadwekar lists simple design tips for the kitchen to ensure its effectiveness.

1. Shape and design: Kitchens are generally divided into various types such as L shape, C shape, gallery kitchen, island, etc where one side of the counter is reserved for dry preparation and electronic cooking like microwave and food processor. There should be ample natural light to avoid spoiling of food especially during humid weather.

2. Space utilization: For effective utilisation of kitchen space, an imaginary triangle known as ‘kitchen triangle’ should be created between the cooktop, refrigerator and the sink. The total distance between these three areas should not be more than 26 ft and any one side should not be less than 4 ft or more than 9 ft. Other than this, the ease of the kitchen layout also depends on the arrangement of items along the work surface.

3Cabinets and shelves: Frequently used items should be placed nearby and in proper shelves. It can also be hanged from under the top shelf in the kitchen. This makes it easy to reach and helps to reuse the wall space under the cabinets. Cutlery and silverware should be placed near the serving area. Instead of cupboards, install drawers that are easy to use. Also, cabinets should be placed at least 2 ft above the counter space. Similarly, a full roll-out with extending arm will be very helpful for corner cabinets.

4. Versatile design: For a small kitchen, elaborate planning may not be possible. However, if you are lucky to have a staircase near the kitchen, you can use it for storage purposes with shelves and racks. To create a good ambiance, under lighting in cabinets is a good technique. Leave the space above the cooktop as it is in the absence of a chimney as a safety measure. The kitchen countertop should have a trim on its edge and gently slope towards the sink to drain liquids easily.
