Though furniture is undoubtedly an essential part of a home, vastu directs us never to use it in excess. In fact, you can disturb the vastu or even create bad vastu with thoughtlessly selected/used furniture. Expert SK Mehta shows us how not to fall into this trap...

  1. Always purchase furniture, or wood to be made into furniture, on an auspicious day. Tuesdays, Saturdays and No Moon days are not recommended.
  2. Make sure that the wood is from ‘positive’ trees such as shisham (Indian rosewood), sandal, ashoka, sagwan (teak), sal, arjuna or neem. Wood from peepal or banyan, and trees which are burnt or have been infested by termites, is considered bad.
  3. If you need to store wood that will be used to make furniture, never keep it in the North, East or North East directions. This may cause delay in the carpentry process and also affect the inflow of money.
  4. While getting your home furnished, always start with the South or West areas and end up in the North East section.
  5. Always keep lighter furniture in the North and East, and heavier pieces in the South and West.
  6. Only walls on the South and West should be clad with ply-board.
  7. If the headboard of the bed lies on the South or West, you should increase the height of the wall beyond the headboard and decorate with designs or install a showcase.
  8. Furniture should have rounded corners. Sharp-cornered pieces are not only dangerous but also give off bad energy.
  9. If your furniture unit is going to touch the ceiling and create five corners through the way it’s designed, it’s better to reduce its height and stop it just short of the ceiling.
  10. If you need to create a unit for your LCD in the North East section, make sure the wood you use is thin. Moreover, the unit should not touch the floor.
  11. You can incorporate the forms of Radha-Krishna, flowers, creepers, the sun, lions, leopards, peacocks, horses, bulls, cows, elephants and fish into your furniture safely.
  12. Steel furniture is quite popular, but is considered to be more positive for offices.
  13. Always use light polish/laminate on your furniture. Dark and dull colours bring negativity.
  14. Furniture which has corners in odd numbers is not good.
