The concept of home workspace is to create a space that does not take away from the décor of the home. It promotes remote working and creates the right ambience to work while at home. Architect Sanjukta Nandy lists tips on how to efficiently organize your home workspace to make it more functional.
- First and foremost designate a spot in your house that is devoid of any kind of distractions. If you have a tight space, ensure that you select a space where there is no disturbance of sound etc. Keep the door locked. This ensures that you have privacy to work peacefully.
- Secondly, you can keep a white board behind the door. This will help you maintain schedules. You can also write down ideas as and when it pops up in your mind on this white board. It also ensures that you can function efficiently.
- Furniture is an important factor in the home workspace. You can have a table where you can keep a laptop or desktop. If you don’t have a fixed study table then you can opt for a foldable study table that is easily movable. You can also have a large shelf that is hinged to the wall that can be pulled out whenever you want to work.
- Dining chairs can be used as your work chair. For comfort, long back chair is preferable. You can use different chairs as per your preference and comfort. Linear square sofa with broad armrest is another piece of furniture that makes your home workspace functional. You can have a piece of wood that can rest between the armrest. This is where the laptop can be placed for laptop-oriented work. This will differ based on the nature of your work.
- Make sure your home office has a decluttered feel because after all it is still a home at the end of the day. For this you can incorporate drawers so that all the essential items can be tucked in. In case you don’t have one you can purchase ready-to-use stationery drawers. Temporary storage boxes can be used to put folders away. Use colours for temporary boxes so it looks like an art piece that goes along with your home decor.
- You can also dig out a space for drawers and make compartments in it to keep your stuff neatly. Trolley shelf with wheels is another option. You can have three stacks of shelves with wheels. Use this to keep all your files and folders. Store it in such a way that it goes into the bed or some quiet corner. As this is easily movable it becomes like a storage that does not give an office like feel.
- A table lamp ensures ample light on the table. It also gives a more professional feel. For an office like feel you can opt for a foldable table lamp that can be kept in drawers and removed whenever required. Table clock on the study table is another element that helps you keep a track of time solely dedicated to office work.
- Use a red chart paper instead of a soft board to make notes. Soft board is restrictive as it is a fixed accessory and may not help you with notes when you need.
- Instead of a soft board with pins opt for blue tac. Roll out a chart paper with blue tac on the wall and use Post-its on it to keep important points handy.
- Opt for baskets with a frame structure instead of shelves for stationery-oriented work. It can also hold all your stationery in one particular place.
