Are you fed up with the frequent invasions of cockroaches, ants, mosquitoes, spiders and lizards at your home? Not only are some pests unpleasant to have as company, they also pose a serious hazard to our health. Liju Mathai, Director, Vema Pest Control Company, gives us some pointers to keep these creepy little unwanted guests at bay.
1. There are a number of pest control agencies which work under the Indian Pest Control Association. It is advised to take services from an agency that has a license, and which uses chemicals as standardized by the World Health Organization (WHO).
2. These WHO-certified chemicals are neither in powder or spray form, but are made of gel, and hence are not a threat to health.
3. Cockroaches and mosquitoes are difficult to eliminate totally, but their entry into your house can certainly be controlled. Pest control services cover three major areas: restricting entry of cockroaches; protecting wood from termites and controlling common pests (under the General Disinfectant Treatment).
4. Newly constructed houses must have termite pest control done. Its effect lasts for around five years. An old house, on the other hand, will benefit from such a treatment for about three years.
5. A home needs to be treated thrice a year, and this will take just half an hour to complete. A single pest control will cost around 750-800 INR, giving you freedom from pests and moths for about three months. What’s more, there’s is no foul smell after the treatment is done.
6. New pest control technologies don’t even need you to empty rooms for the procedure. This is quite a boon especially in case of kitchens which can be quite tedious to empty and then ‘put together’ post treatment.
Modern pest control technologies do away with the process of emptying rooms, a boon in case of kitchens.
7. Pest control should always be done for the entire house, and not for a particular room. Even washrooms need to be treated.
8. If you are planning to shift homes, get pest control done in your old house itself so that you don’t carry unwanted guests with you to your new place.
9. Termites dwell in mud, and are harmful to wooden assets, while cockroaches are attracted to unclean areas. For termites, you need to get pest control done once a year, but for cockroaches it is necessary to get the treatment done at least three times a year.
10. For those who live in apartment complexes, it is advisable to get the entire building treated. This will also optimize the cost.
