While it's a definite joy to have one of God's little creatures as part of your family, your home may take a beating if you aren't careful. Vishnu Dutt Tripathi, secretary, Kennel Club, Bhopal, tells you how to pet-proof your home.
1. Use curtains, bed linen, rugs, pet-beds and other furniture covers which can be easily home-laundered.
2. Never forget to vacuum-clean the house regularly.
3. Cats have sharp nails and love scratching. Always keep your sofas and other cushioned furniture covered with a scratch pad to avoid marks and tearing.
4. For a car trip-loving dog, make sure you have leather seats so that you can wipe the fur off easily. But for a cat, carry a cat-box with you while travelling.
5. Avoid carpets; cleaning them can be quite tedious. Wooden flooring is best for pets as it is easy to clean and also acts as an insulator.
6. If you need to cover a tiled floor, use linen carpets.
7. Cats and dogs can jump high and break your expensive antiques, so always keep them at a height the pet can't reach.
8. If you don't want drifts of fur floating around your home, groom your pet regularly, outside your home.
9. If you do have a carpet and your pet rabbit ruins it, soak the wetness on the carpet, then sprinkle a bit of baking soda on the stain. Create a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and dishwasher liquid, and apply it on the carpet. Leave the paste for 15-20 minutes and vacuum it. For dark stains, you may need to repeat the process two to three times.
10. Lavender oils reduce hair fall. You can also use enzyme-based sprays to mask pet smells. It's easy to make a citrus enzyme cleaner at home. Mix 7 spoons of brown sugar, one and a half cup of lemon and orange peels and one litre water. The solution should last you for three months.
