DurgDurg is one of the fast-growing cities in the central Chhattisgarh state of east-central India. The city is just 6 km away from Bhilai (the steel city) and is located to the east of the Seonath River. Durg is now part of the suburban area of Bhilai.

The city is known for its agricultural market. Durg is heavily engaged in rice milling and pigeon peas. Due to the presence of Bhilai Steel Plant, the city has been considered as an industrial centre of the state.

Brass work and bell-metal work are common industrial setup. Apart from this Durg has oil pressing, rice husking and weaving as well as part of the industry.

Demographics: The population of Durg was 268,679 as per 2011 India census, with the male population being 51 percent of the population and the females of 49 percent. The city has an average literacy rate of 72 percent. Durg-Bhilainagar Urban Agglomeration had a population of 1,064,077as per 2011 census. Durg-Bhilainagar Urban Agglomeration constitutes Durg (M Corp.), Bhilai Nagar (M Corp.), Dumardih (OG), Bhilai Charoda, Kumhari(M), and Utai (NP). In the year 2011, the Durg Municipal Corporation had a total population of 268,679. The local language here spoken are Hindi and Urdu.

 
Climate: Winters in Durg are pleasant with temperature ranging from 8°C to 17°C. Summers are hot with an average temperature remaining at 38°C. The maximum temperature reaches 40°C. Early summer is the best time to visit the city. Monsoon is the time heavy shower in the town because of its location. Due to heavy rainfall, Durg has high humidity, and the temperature remains around 25°C to 37°C.

October to March are the best months to visit Durg as the weather is pleasant. The temperatures and humidity levels are also low.
Culture:
Durg has a rich cultural heritage, and the people here pride themselves with folk dance, music and drama. The city has a tribal influence due to more than 35 different tribes inhabiting within the district. People of all major religions such as Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism and Christianity dwell here in the city displaying its unity in diversity. The Traditional folk music and dances are most popular among the locals here.

The most famous dance form of the city is Pandwanithat narrates the Mahabharata epic in the form of a folk ballad. Another renowned folk dance is RautNachathat is mainly performed by the Yadava Caste people entailing shepherds and cowherds. Lord Krishna is worshipped in this folk dance. The ancient city of Durg that has been mentioned in Mahabharata and also in the Chinese manuscripts also attracts tourists from far and wide. The district is a vital pilgrimage centre and has several temples such as the famous Deorbhijia Temple and ChandiMandirin its vicinity.

In ancient India, Durg was part of the Kosala kingdom, and the name was derived from the Hindi term durg (fort); the remains of an old fortress is there, which was used by the Marathas as a base of operations in subjugating Chhattisgarh.

Chatt Pooja is a grand and significant festival that has its origin in the state of Bihar. However, it is also celebrated in Chhattisgarh with full passion. Most of the people participate in this event. This event is usually celebrated when the first crop is harvested in north India, and people celebrate the first crop cutting thanking God for providing them with this opportunity. People take a dip in holy rivers after the festival and enchant of Gods and Goddesses Vandana to make the environment serene.
Other festivals in Durg include Durga Pooja, Ganesh Chaturthi and Kali Pooja.
Food : People here like vegetables and rice to eat during breakfast, lunch as well as dinner. The staple food of Durg is rice, wheat, maize and jowar. Popular dishes here are arhar dal and Bafauri. Rakhiabadi curry cooked with rakhi fruit, slit gram, green chillies and coriander leaves is another delicious food of the region. People with a sweet tooth can enjoy moong dal ka halwa, jalebi, peth and kaju Katri.
Durg administration : Durg District has been divided into 14 Tehsils, 898 Panchayats and 2202 Villages. Durg has 40 wards.
Economy of Durg : Durg is an industrial centre of the state. So, the economy lies mostly in the industry. Handicraft is also another source of income for many.
Transport:

Durg has a well-developed transportation system and the city well-connected with the rest of the country's major cities by rail, road and air. Being well connected routes, reaching Durg is relatively easy.

Air:- The nearest airport is in Raipur (Swamy Vivekananda Airport), which is the capital city of Chhattisgarh and Raipur is about 54 km away from Durg. Raipur is directly connected to all the major cities such as Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Ranchi and Vishakhapatnam.
Rail:- Durg Railway Station is the principal railway station of this region.
Road:- The city is connected to Nagpur and Raipur by road NH 6 (GE Road). Durg lies on the Mumbai-Howrah mainline. So, the primary modes of local commute are via buses, taxis, tempos and autos.
