The Pillai residence in Surat, Gujarat, put design firm P&D Associates in a tricky spot owing to the client's request for a generous use of teakwood. Responding to the challenge, the designers used contrasting colours and brass as design counterpoints to the predominantly wooden shell.

1. Rich colour palette such as deep red and shades of gold apart from teak and brass has been used in this dining cum living room.

2. The entrance door has geometric patterns on it. Adding richness to the door is the brass handle that looks extremely attractive. White walls and cream-coloured tiles have been retained in all the rooms to give a spacious look.

3. Minimal design is the main feature of this master bedroom. Mood lighting on the ceiling and wall puts focus on showpieces and the wooden headboard has been decorated with cut-outs of lotus design in brass.

4. To add a luxury quotient in the son's bedroom, walls have been given an off-white finish.

5. The ordinary-looking centre table stands out thanks to the strip of brass polish on it.

6. Blue colour used for cushions and near the dresser highlights the guest bedroom beautifully.

7.  (Left) Charcoal painting with geometric patterns enhances this compact dining space, which is located against a teak block. Here, the black switchboard adds variation to the wooden setting. (Right) In continuity with the brass theme, brass bells hanging on the fibreboard jaali acts as a separator between the dining and puja area. Diamond and star-shaped shadows from the jaali brightens the opposite wall.

8. Interesting play of contrasting colours such as hues of travertine and brown used here ensures that its cool quotient remains intact.
