We list down all the terms that are used in different parts of the country with regards to the real estate in the country:
1. Globally recognized measurement units:
- Square foot: This is the most commonly used measurement unit, and according to the RERA rules, the builder has to lay down the property measurements according to the same.
- Square yard: A square yard is 9 ft.
- Square meter: one square meter is equal to 10.76 sq. ft.
- Acre: One acre is 100 sq m and 43560 sq. ft.
- Hectare: One hectare is equal to 100 acres and 10,000 square meters.
2. The measurement unit used in East India:
- Dhur: Used in UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Tripura, Dhur denotes varying sizes depending on the specific state. Dhur in Bihar is over 68 sq. ft. while in Tripura it only indicates 3.6 sq. ft.
- Kattha: Used in Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and Madhya Pradesh; the value of Kattha varies from state to state. It can range between 600 sq. ft. to 2800 sq. ft.
- Chatak: Used primarily in West Bengal 1 Chatak is 180 sq. ft.
- Lecha: Used mainly in Assam, 1 Lecha is 144 sq. ft.
3. Measurement units used in North India:
- Gaj: Gaj is equivalent to a square yard and stands for 9 sq. ft. It is used mainly in Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana.
- Bigha: Widely used in Haryana, UP, Assam, MP, Punjab, etc. the measurement can vary from state to state. Typically, 4-5 Bigha makes up one Acre.
- Biswa: One Biswa can be anywhere between 50 to 150 square yards depending on the state. It is mainly used in UP, Punjab, Haryana.
- Biswani: 20 Biswani make for one Biswa.
- Killa: One acre of land ins called Killa.
- Kanal: Used in Punjab and Haryana, 8 Kanal makes up one acre.
- Ghumao: Used in HP, one ghumao is one acre.
- Sarsahi: Used in Punjab and Haryana, 30.35 sq. ft. is one Sarsahi.
- Marla: Used in Punjab and Haryana, one Marla is 272.25 sq. ft.
4. Measurement units used in South India:
- Ankanam: Used in AP and Karnataka, one Ankanam is 72 sq. ft.
- Guntha: Used in AP, Maharashtra and Karnataka, one Guntha is 1089 sq. ft.
- Kuncham: Used in AP, one Kuncham is 484 square yards.
- Ground: used in Tamil Nadu, Ground stands for 2400 sq. ft.
- Cent: Used in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, one Cent is 435.6 sq. ft.
