Concept of modular kitchens is gaining popularity with coming days, as they are not only appealing but also are comforting to work while cooking. In addition to the development in kitchen materials, variety of materials are introduced every alternate month to make kitchen working an easy task. The modular kitchen is a combined product of different material for different sections. For example , the cabinet and base units are usually renovated with laminates or sheets, while, granites are still ruling as first choice of material for working platform and countertops, These material used in the modular kitchen has its own pros and cons. Lets know them as guided by Ar. Alok Bhagat :

1Natural Wood

Natural wood or 'solid wood' is said to be one of the best materials for the modular kitchen. Teak, marindi, sheesham, etc are preferred wood varietiesfor modular kitchen , specially for designing cabinets.

Pros :
1. Variety in color, texture and grains.
2. Provide natural variation
3. The natural wood gives the traditional as well as modern look depending on the interiors needed.
4. Easy to clean.
Cons :
1. Moisture may damage the wood skin if kept in moisture for a long duration.
2. Bad quality wood leads to dented or uneven surfaces.

2 Laminates

Laminates are alternate replacement of woods. It contain sheets of wood with plastic, resin or paper. Majorly found as low-pressure laminates or high-pressure laminates.

Pros :
1. High durability.
2. Resistant to moisture permeability .
3. Low cost product.
Cons :
1. Require proper installation to cure it from peeling off of the edges.
2. As this material uses resins and plastic, it may emit some toxic gases.

3 Veneers

In wood working, veener refers to thin slices of solid or natural wood. As it contains wood, it offers natural wood-like appearance

Pros :
1. Veneers have the quality of solid wood.
2. Sustainable and economic.
3. Can provide a high-gloss, semi-gloss and matte effect to the surface
Cons :
1. On exposure to natural light, this material tends to fade.
2. Not resistant to scratches.

4 PVC

Short to Poly vinyl chloride is one of the highly manufactured synthetic plastic polymer. Considering its toughness, it is considered to be the best material for modular kitchen cabinets.

Pros :
1. Available in wide range of colors.
2. Is waterproof and resistant to termites.
3. Inexpensive.
4. Easy to install and maintain.
Cons :
1. PVC material is not resistant to fire and turns yellow with time.
2. Joints may become loose after some time.

5 Stainless Steel

For the one who love to share feel of aluminum and plastic in kitchen interior uses stainless steel as first preference for design.

Pros :
1. Resistant to corrosion and staining. They are sturdy and remain unaffected by humidity and heat.
2. Easy to clean and durable and hence, are widely chosen as the kitchen cabinet door material.
Cons :
1. They have limited range of colors .
2. Tend to get dents and start making noise with time.

6 Acrylic

Acrylic is the Polymethyl methacrylate. This material is currently gaining popularity in the modular kitchen field. It is commercially available as Crylux, Plexiglas, Lucite, etc.

Pros :
1. Acrylic is non-toxic in nature.
2. It provides a high gloss finish.
3. Helps the kitchen to look bigger.
4. Is resistant to moisture and scratches.
5. Available in different colors.
Cons :
1. The edges of this material are very fragile.
2. Needs regular cleaning as dust becomes easily visible on its surface.
3. It is expensive as compared to laminate.

7 Aluminum

Aluminum is one of the most versatile material used in a modular kitchen to enhance kitchen's look.

Pros :
1. This material is suitable for all climates
2. Is pocket friendly.
3. It offers ease of handling
4. It has good durability and is resistant to moisture, fire and rust.
Cons :
1. It is prone to get dents easily and creates noise.
