Reasons for houses ageing:
A house is a made up of various materials that wear and tear with time. Environmental and external factors contribute to the ageing of the building. Poorly designed homes also age faster than the homes that use good construction materials. Things that are in regular use like plumbing, electrical wiring etc get worn out over time. Factors such as opening and closing of doors and windows, construction quality, painting, roofing etc also contribute to the ageing of the house.
When it comes to independent housing, the amenities are shared by limited people only while in apartments or buildings the amenities are used by many people which is the reason for early ageing of apartment buildings.
Increasing the lifespan of the construction:
There are certain ways with which one can increase the lifespan of the construction:
- Proper cleaning of the building, waste disposal and segregation is the first and foremost way to keep the building young.
- With time the house gets infested with pests and termites. It is important to do whitewashing of the house and pest control every few years.
- The weather conditions affect the longevity of the building. When living in areas where it rains most of the year, it is important to make sure that there is never seepage on your house. A proper outlet for water and mud should be given. Places where there are intense humidity and heat, the exterior of the house should be maintained and proper wall exterior paints must be used to keep the house cool.
- Using metals for the construction of the house while living in coastal areas is not a good idea. The metal will rust quickly and decrease the lifespan of the building.
- Using the construction design that is suitable for the place you live in, is the right way to make sure that your building has a longer lifespan.
