Artificial grass or turf is just the thing if you're looking for a quick green-up without the attendant problems of watering and maintenance. You can use it anywhere: lawns, terraces, balconies... and now, if you go by the latest trend, even walls! Ankur Arora, Vani Wallpapers, Bhopal, educates us on the basics of this material.

1. Artificial turf is recommended for areas where you want something green but cannot afford/cultivate natural grass.

2. Many companies develop artificial turf of different thicknesses (10 mm, 15 mm, 25 mm and 35 mm). The thicker the turf, the more dense the look.

3. These turfs are available in widths of 1.8 mt, 2 mt and 4 mt, and a length of 25 mt.

4. The place to be converted into a lawn is measured in square feet.

5. Turf of a true grass-like green colour is priced between 140-150 INR per square feet.

According to a research, artificial grass can save up to 55 gallons of water per year. What's more, you can remove it as and when required.

6. Before installing an artificial lawn, the area needs to be cleaned and levelled. For this you may need a professional installer.

7. The main advantage of artificial grass is that it can be installed in dry areas as well as around swimming pools, or in between the tiles of a pathway. Those keen on having a small lawn in a balcony, should opt for this material.

8. Indoors, an artificial lawn will last for about 5-7 years, while outdoors, it remains as good as new for 8-10 years.

9. Although artificial turf is largely maintenance free, it needs to cleaned (if there are pets around) and dusted. For this, you can use a pressure water pipe or a brush, once or twice every two months.

10. Unlike natural grass, artificial grass doesn't change with temperature and isn't prone to attacks by pests.

11. According to a research, artificial grass can save up to 55 gallons of water per year, as you don't need to water it time to time. Nor do you need to maintain it with mud and manure. You can remove it as and when required.

12. Artificial turf is made either of nylon, polythene or polypropylene, which do not impact the environment significantly. These materials also do not pose any harm to kids and pets.

13. As it can easily be uninstalled, artificial turf is highly reusable. The artificial turf has some drawbacks too. Don't expect a cooling effect or insect/bird life to be attracted to the faux version.
