In addition to being plain careful about how you use electricity, buying the right appliances will definitely help you to bring down the electricity bill. Jagjeet Singh of Usha Company educates you on the basics of this system.
- According to the committee formed by Indian Government, every BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) certified product is allotted a rating of 1-5 stars. Purchasing appliances with a good star rating will help you save money as they consume less electricity.
- Star rating is via a standard test that tracks how much electricity a particular device will consume in a single year.
- BEE rates only those devices which adhere to prescribed rules and regulations. Hence, not every appliance enjoys a star rating.
- Star-rated appliances have been around since the last ten years. Refrigerators were the first to be rated under this system. They were followed by ACs and subsequently other appliances.
- Star-rated devices are more efficient and reliable.
- The star rating system is available for a range of devices: ACs, refrigerators, TVs, geysers, ovens, fans and even coolers.
- Devices with and without star ratings have a huge difference in prices. This is especially true in case of ACs, where the gap may be as much as 25%.
- The number of stars reflects the energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the product. The less the ratio, the less the number of stars awarded. Therefore, it’s wise to opt for a high star-rated product when buying an appliance that consumes a lot of electricity.
- The rating is revised every two years. It was last revised in 2014, when the scale of rating was changed to 5.
