Designing your home with cushions can be the most dynamic and stress-free tool to get new looks. Cushions are decorating accessories that are elegant, stylish, versatile, easy to maintain and light on the pocket. Architect Sanjukta Nandy gives simple tips on how to add charm, colour, vibrancy, finesse and interest to your home with a collection of cushions.
1Youthful mix-and-match look
To get a mix-and-match look, decide on an energetic theme, a boisterous colour and then play around with cushions on a neutral-coloured sofa. Although cushions play an integral role in decorating a space other accessories like lampshades, rugs, photoframes, etc, as in the picture, complement the whole decor.
2Vividly feminine look
Adding a feminine touch to your sofa can be achieved easily. For this, you can choose pink as the highlight colour and blend in colours like yellows, oranges and a touch of peach. Use a throw cushion on the floor with a pop of colour to gain an energetic feel.
3Classic contrast look
A classic and contemporary look can be achieved with a plush comfortable sofa and cushions in contrasting colours.The navy-blue sofa with rust and cream colour cushions in the picture strikes a perfect and elegant balance.
4Quirky and fun look with animal images
Fun patterns and images of animals are distinct ways to decorate cushions if you want to display your funny bone. As displayed in the image, you can choose and put together different kinds of animals (a set of three works well). You could also stack them together or symmetrically organize them one apart from the other with the busy print in the centre.
5Geometrical and futuristic avant-garde look
Bold geometrical patterns, grey sofa, an ultra-modern lampshade and minimal dabs of colour are all you need for a modern and contemporary appeal. This design theme works well for someone with an urban personality who likes to experiment.
6Armchair for the statement look
The right armchair defines the personality of the space. It is a notable feature and not an easy task to choose a cushion for it. Therefore, as shown in the picture, it would be a good idea to choose a neutral and subtle cushion to balance the solidity of the dominant armchair and give a bit of freedom and lightness to the look.
7Daybed versatile look
Daybeds are one of the most versatile and functional pieces of furniture you can own. They serve as an extra seating or spare bed when needed. The daybed could also be dressed up with stacks of cushions in the same colour palette but different prints to achieve a comfortable snug look. On the other hand, you can use a daybed that is slightly decorated with two heavily worked on embroidered cushions, far apart, to add a grace and sophisticated touch.
8Comfortable relaxed look
Cushions are the design influx to your bed during the day. Cushions of different sizes and shapes, starting from the largest near the headrest to the smallest in the front (in decreasing order of size) works wonders. Decide on a mute colour palette and blend neutral colour like creams or whites to give a nice airy look to the bed during the day. The trick to get the right mix is to match some of the cushions with the bedspread.
9Earthy look
For an earthy look, linen cushions with weaving and embroidery is a great combination. These blend well with the ambience and yet retain a personality that flaunts importance in the decor story. Like in the picture, subtle floral embroideries have been teamed with linear stripes and solid colours.
