Balconies are the perfect spot to bask in the sun, sip coffee and spend some peaceful time during winters. Interior designer Deeksha Khatree lists few tips to care for your balconies this winter.
1. Canopy: You can enhance your balcony sitting area with fairy lights and canopy for your chair. A folding canopy is the latest option available. You can use it during winters and keep it indoors in the rains. If you wish to create a canopy at home, you can use a curtain, hula hoop and a metal wire. Hang the curtain on the hula hoop and then hang it in a corner of your balcony using the metal wire. Place your chair under it and hang fairy lights all around to brighten the space up.
2. Mattresses: To give a comfortable feel to the balcony, all you need to do is roll out your old mattress. Place them in a corner and decorate with cushions. If a mattress isn't available, use a rug instead.
3. Swing: Add a swing to your balcony for added comfort. This can be in the form of chair, hammock, etc.
4. Seating: To make the balcony a peaceful retreat, you can have a comfortable bench piled up with pillows and cushions. A small table with a couple of chairs will also serve as a lovely working space.
5. Railing: Decorate the railing of your balcony with attractive greens with planters that can be hooked on. Alternatively, train climbers or creepers on the railing.
6. Lights: These are really important in winter as they make the atmosphere look warm and cosy. Decorate your balcony with lanterns, bulbs, Christmas lights, cane or wooden chandeliers, LED planters, etc. Candles lit in old glass jars is also another option.
7. Plants: Decorate your balcony with flowers such as roses, marigold, flower bulb, petunia, etc. You can also keep ferns near the railing of the balcony to create privacy. Run a climber full of flowers to decorate the railing. For small balconies, hang plants outside the balcony. A decorative Christmas tree in the balcony in the winter adds charm to the season and gives a feeling of festivity to the kids.
8. Flooring: Wood is a popular flooring option for balconies. Terrace floor panels of wood are inexpensive, easy to clean, resistant to frost and make the space appear larger. Besides wooden flooring, you can opt for artificial turf. It creates the look of a small lawn and is also easy to clean. If you want to go for tiling, then antiskid stone-look tiles are the best option for balcony flooring.
