Mulch is a very important component for garden or yard. Mulch is used for landscaping as it contains kitchen waste, rotten vegetables and fruits, plant leaves, etc. It keeps land healthy by keeping the moisture level appropriate and conserves the land mass, thus keeping it together and preventing soil erosion. It keeps a check on the growth of unnecessary plants. There are many variations of mulch with their own moisture holding capacity. Depending on the types of plants, soil, the type of mulch will vary. Here aresome types with their properties :-

1 RUBBER MULCH

Like the name suggests, it is made up from the rubber from discarded, shaved or chopped tires. These tires can be used as an outer covering for plants because of its good insulation against soil. It also provides little to no water loss and high elasticity gives better withstanding against fall. It does not enhance the soil and may contain some chemicals. Thus, should be used with care and proper information.

2 LEAF MULCH

Available right in the yard and garden, leaves which have fallen from trees can be used as mulch. It is free of cost and requires less work with very good functionality. Shredding is needed to form the mulch from leaves as a thick layer of leaves can block the airflow and water absorption by keeping the moisture for prolong duration raising fungus and rotting issues. Leaves which can't be used foor mulch can be used as compost.

3 BARK MULCH

Derived from bark of various conifer trees,it is very enriching mulch which also gives very appealing look and holds water by blocking the complete evaporation of moisture. Its decomposition is beneficial for the soil as it contains nutrients. Given all the pros, the bark mulch is prone to splintering and mostly fragile and light-weighted which makes it movable in high wind.

4 HARDWOOD MULCH

A product of trimmed trees and old wooden stuff, Hardwood mulch is pretty inexpensive and good for plants which depend on a bit alkaline food. It is very easily available in market but it have less life cycle and it not advised to used in the place prone to termites as it's very good food for them while acts against the favour of acid-loving plants.

5 GLASS MULCH

Glass mulch is made up of recycled with the removal of sharp edges. It creates an aesthetic look which is quite unparallel and can be placed anywhere. It is usually made up of different colours, kinds of glasses. It is a bit expensive and should not be merged too much into the water by placing a cloth or plastic sheet between the mulch and soil

6 LAVA ROCK MULCH

Pumice mulch, also known as Lava rock mulch helps the ground stay warm in night by absorbing the heat throughout the day. With the help of any cloth piece or plastic, it can keep weeds away from plants. These rocks are light enough to move around but sturdy enough to damage the plants and things near to it.

7 ENVIRO MULCH

Enviro mulch is uniquely made up of recycled materials like cardboard, paper, old wood, etc. It is essentially same as hardwood in terms of its functionality, the only difference is that it is originating from recycled material and contributing to the environment.

8 HEMLOCK MULCH

A type of hardwood mulch, the hemlock tree contains huge amount of tannins which acts as a repellent for bugs from digging and eating the nutrients of the soil. It is eye-pleasing but with a short lifespan and attracts termites.
