If you have been living in a home for decades and feel like it’s giving you a feel of the 80’s, it’s time for a makeover. Architect Onal Kothari shares valuable tips to give your home a modern look and feel.
- Repaint with neutral colours: Consult a designer, recheck the strength of your structure and play with hues and tones of white and black. For example jali work or patchwork might look old fashion to many home owners, but choosing the right colours give magical effects.
- Cover up old elevation with cladding materials: Transform your exteriors from out-dated to modern by choosing the right cladding material. This will depend on the layout of your home, your attitude towards material maintenance and expecting budget.
- Replacing roof tiles: If you reside in a coastal area, chances are that you might be occupying a large roof tiling for elevation purpose. Change in roofing material can make a big impact. Modern home designs are environment friendly. If your budget allows, it is worth changing the tiling material. Opt for one that maintains thermal insulation, permits natural light and is easier to change.
- Windows and doors: Contemporary style encompasses low lines and natural materials with clear decor. If your house was built in early 90’s, it might have the traditional jali pattern window design. Replace your timber or wooden sash windows with aluminium casements.
- Remodel the entrance: If you are looking to modernize your structure, care needs to be taken at the entrance too. Avoid a direct entrance to your living from the road. Add a welcoming porch, create interest with exterior lights and rethink elevation colours.
- Landscape your garden: If your property allots you a garden space, incorporate landscapes with respect to the microclimate. If you owe a home with fewer possibilities to cater plants on land, have vertical gardening that blends with your new design.
- Lighting: Improve illumination in exterior by mixing cool and warm lighting throughout the home. Create warm and cosy areas in outdoor sittings and bright wall lights, ceiling lights and spotlights for security purpose. Lights should be in harmony with the exterior material, making the home comfortable, clean and secure for modern exterior.
- Glass: This gives a prism like appeal to the exterior. They are trendy and are being insulated in mass since the beginning of 20th century. Use of plain glass makes the building more modernist. Try to blend eco-friendly glass with window frames.
