In any house, the inner spaces belong to the user of the house whereas the exterior belongs to others who move on the street, neighbours living in the opposite lane or people moving or walking on the road. If the exterior treatment of any house is in harmony with other houses, it will reflect a feeling of symmetry and togetherness. But if it is in contrast with others, it will look secluded. Architect Manmohan Khanna lists simple rules to make your house look different and not too much contrast at the same time.
1. Keep the exteriors simple and use minimal materials, colours and elements.
2. Plant trees or plants in the courtyard or near the boundary wall and projections wherever possible.
3. Use natural materials on the surfaces which are easy to maintain in the long run.
4. Try to maintain a visual relationship between interior spaces and exterior spaces using large size of glass panes without compromising the ventilation of the house.
5. Use murals on some part of the wall to highlight or add sculptures to enhance the beauty of the exterior.
6. Light plays a very important role in the creation of good environment. Use of diffused lights, focus lights or garden lights, pedestal lamps etc. provide a spectacular look to your home exterior and garden space.
7. The entrance, porch and verandah should be highlighted with special effects using lights and plants which will give an inviting feeling.
8. All the treatments will vary according to the size and shapes of the exterior facades, locations and orientation.
