Front yards are spaces in a house that are used by everybody in the house for different purposes. Architect Mrunmayi Wadwekar gives you different ways to add style to the front yard.
- To begin with, determine the needs of your family, whether you need the space for kids, pets or just for leisure purpose or social gatherings. If the space is going to be used by kids, plants and hard or soft surface layout that can be harmful to kids/pets should be avoided.
- While deciding the layout and use of the space, study the sun and wind patterns so that you can enjoy the climate as per the time.
- Selection of plants will matter as per individual choice but nevertheless plants should be selected based on their height, foliage (growth pattern), flowering season, etc. It is advisable to have different shrubs that flower in different seasons so as to have a colourful garden all year around.
- While deciding plants, keep in mind their characteristics and climatic dependability. Exotic plants cannot survive in harsh Indian weather conditions.
- A layout can be identified using the space as it is and then decide on how the house is related to the yard space. This can otherwise be done by identifying a focal point in the yard and arranging the layout accordingly.
- Create a direct entrance to the front door as people tend to walk the shortest distance.
- To create a low-maintenance yard, opt for materials like pavers, and hard surfaces and keep planting to the minimal.
- Add trees and accent plants for enhanced emphasis. Raised planting beds can also serve as seating areas. Adding a water feature can sooth the nerves and create a calming atmosphere.
